The third day of the 2023 MNL title match 16 took place at Thuwunna Stadium on 9 December. Shan United secured victory by defeating Kachin United with a 3-2 victory, clinching the championship with one game remaining.
Shan United, the defending champion, holds a six-point lead over the second-placed Yangon team with two games remaining. With a victory in this game, they will secure the championship with one game to spare, winning by just one point.
Shan United made history in the MNL competition this season by winning four consecutive seasons. The Yangon United achieved three straight championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Then, Shan United won four successive seasons in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023 (the competition was not held in 2021), setting a new record in 2013.
The Shan United team has won the championship for the fifth time in the last six seasons, matching the five championships achieved by the Yangon United team.
The Shan United team made some changes to the starting line-up. Although the Kachin United team has been relegated, they utilized a diverse roster to achieve a positive outcome.
Following this match, Shan United secured the championship with 59 points from 21 games, while Kachin United accumulated 10 points from the same number of games.
Shan United’s undefeated streak since 2020 has now reached 55 games. If they can secure at least a draw in the match against Yangon United on 18 December, they will again achieve an undefeated record for the entire season. Also, Shan United grabbed the points championship in the 2019 and 2022 seasons.
The final match 16 will take place today (10 December) at Thuwunna Stadium, where Maha United will face off against Yangon United. — Ko Nyi Lay/KZW
