Myanmar Railways will deploy carriages imported from Spain for trains operating on the Yangon Circular Railway.
DEMU (diesel-electric multiple unit) carriages, manufactured by Spain-based Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), are poised for immediate use pending the completion of the circular railway upgrade.
The initial shipment, comprising a six-carriage unit, arrived at Thilawa Port in Yangon on 5 February and will soon undergo test runs.
While the railway renovation nears completion, ongoing efforts include platform elevation and station maintenance work.
Myanmar Railways signed a contract with Mitsubishi Corporation to construct 66 carriages for the Yangon Circular Railway and 180 for the Yangon-Mandalay Railway on 7 December 2020. Initial reports suggest that, under the agreement, CAF will produce the carriages with some equipment made in Japan. — TWA/NT
