Cultivation of paddy, the staple food of Myanmar, has been completed in Myanmar for a few months. Thanks to the mechanized farming system, Myanmar farmers grow paddy as double and triple cropping on their farmlands as part of plans to increase per-acre yield. Now is the time of making preparations to harvest the short-term species of monsoon paddy.
Local farmers have already harvested summer paddy in most of the areas of the nation. The time of cultivation is different in all regions and states depending on climatic conditions and the supply of irrigated water. Generally, Myanmar has harvested summer paddy and then tried to cultivate monsoon paddy in the upper Myanmar areas whereas farmers from the lower Myanmar are focusing on the harvesting of short-term species of monsoon paddy called ‘Kauklyin’.
Prices of rice are higher in the months of July and August on a yearly basis. It is because no species of paddy is harvested at that time. It is an interval after harvesting the summer paddy for at least one month while the monsoon paddy is being cultivated. So, the two-month period is always difficult for consumers because of the high prices of rice.
Hence, merchants manipulate the market of foods as they wish how to control the market, how to storage paddy and rice and how the volume of paddy will be exported. In fact, both merchants and consumer people are Myanmar citizens. So, the merchants should embrace the sympathy of all consumers without making any trouble. They should monitor the lives of consumers who try to overcome the daily challenges of food supplies. Prices of rice should not be a burden for the people.

It is because the new species of monsoon paddy is expected to be harvested in late September or early October. When the paddy has been harvested, various kinds of rice will flow into the market, bringing lower prices of paddy to the consumers.

Merchants need to remember that they themselves are also consumers. As such, they should adjust the prices of rice for the people who are residing in the country where various paddy species are grown and harvested all year round for prioritizing local consumption.
