YCDC to build underpass between Shwedagon and People’s Square

The scale model of the underpass to be built was shown in photographs at the groundbreaking ceremony held on 19 October.

The Yangon City Development Committee has stated that an underpass will be constructed to connect the Shwedagon Pagoda and the People’s Square on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township.
The underpass that will connect the west entrance to Shwedagon Pagoda, the People’s Square, and the People’s Park will be 23 feet wide and 461 feet and nine inches long and includes four exits, four escalators, and two lifts for people with disabilities that can accommodate just 10 passengers each at a time. It is said that the project period will take about 14 months.
According to the YCDC, the construction of the underground pedestrian tunnel (underpass) is aimed at making traffic safty and comfortable for people to travel to the Shwedagon Pagoda and the People’s Square and to create a modern infrastructure. — TWA/CT
