2023 sees 163 accidents on YGN-MDY Expressway: Increased fatalities despite fewer incidents

In 2023, the Nay Pyi Taw Expressway Police Office reported 163 accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay expressway, causing injuries to 326 individuals and claiming the lives of 86. Various factors contributed to these highway accidents, including high-speed driving, drivers nodding off in drowsiness, negligence of pedestrians, motorcycle driving, reckless driving, tyre punctures, and machine malfunctions.
A expressway police officer stated, “Upon examining the causes of accidents, we find that they result from high-speed driving, driver drowsiness, vehicles jumping on medians or veering off the road due to the driver’s inability to control the vehicle’s speed at bends. The primary reason for all these incidents is human errors.”
Comparing the data to 2022, which recorded 169 traffic accidents, 280 injuries, and 57 fatalities, the number of traffic accidents in 2023 was slightly lower, but there was an increase in both the number of deaths and injuries. — TWA/KZW
