751 inmates from Mandalay Central Prison freed from sentences

A total of 7,749 prisoners across the country were pardoned for their sentences and 751 inmates from Mandalay Central Prison were freed from their sentences yesterday, on the Full Moon of Second Waso, 1385 ME which is also the Dhammacakka Day. The State has pardoned the inmates to mark Dhammacakka Day, to bring happiness to the public and to uphold humanitarian grounds.
Region Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Kyaw Kyaw Min and Minister for Transport Mandalay Region Police Force Commander Police Brig-Gen Sein Lwin of Mandalay Region Government gave their speeches to 751 pardoned inmates — 638 males and 113 females — at the Mandalay Central Prison yesterday. Afterwards, the pardoned prisoners were released from the prison after undergoing a medical examination and receiving daily and travel allowances.
“We will provide pardoned prisoners with food allowances and travel allowances according to the rate mentioned in the bylaw and we will also bring you to railway stations, ports and bus terminals to return home. This is also an auspicious day. The Head of State has shown his regard on humanitarian grounds and sympathy for the prisoner’s family by giving a pardon to the inmates on this auspicious day for Buddhists and I am very happy about it. And I am also happy for you as you will reunite with your family soon,” Mandalay Region Director of the Correctional Department U Cho Win Htun explained.
“I would like to express my gratefulness to the Chairman of the State Administration Council and officials. I have long been waiting for a chance to go back home as soon as possible and see my family. Now, I have that chance and I am on cloud nine as I will see my family soon. I am also happy for my fellow prisoners who are exempted from their sentences,” a pardoned inmate said.
In Mandalay Region, a total of 1,336 prisoners of who 1,118 male and 218 females serving their terms in five prisons and seven camps were released yesterday. — Maung Aye Chan/TH
