Workshop held on conservation of forests in Mekong region

It is a regional-level project that is jointly implemented by five countries of the Mekong region: Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, said Deputy Minister U Tun Ohn.
The establishment of test plots for planting various plants, including searching for pure teak trees and timber production areas in collaboration with the Department of Forest and the International Tropical Timber Organization-ITTO, was able to be established during the project.
Deputy Minister U Tun Ohn said that they are maintained at Forestry Research Stations such as No 5 Moe Swe Station and No 7 Lapamkong Station.
Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Tun Ohn said this while holding the International Tropical Timber Organization-ITTO-Mekong -Teak Project for sustainability workshop at 8:30 am yesterday at the Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw.
Furthermore, there are four countries in the world where teak grow naturally and Myanmar is one of these countries, the deputy minister added.
“Currently, the whole country has stopped teak and hardwood extraction and is cooperating with the international community to maintain forest resources.
“To preserve teak strains and proliferate good breeds, we were able to open training courses to improve the capacity of local people as well as forest employees.
Since the project has been completed in the 2022-2023 financial year, the conditions and results of the project and experiences and conservation of forest resources are important,” he added.
The deputy minister said that they will receive advice and discussions for Timber Legality activities, and believe that the results of the discussions will be beneficial not only to the department but also to the country.
Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Min Thu, Permanent Secretary U Hla Maung Thein, directors-general, managing directors, the rector, the deputy permanent secretary, the deputy director-general of the Forestry Department and officials, the Forest Research Institute researchers and invitees attended the workshop. — MNA
