Myanmar ships over 13,000 tonnes of shrimp to external markets in past ten months

More than 13,000 tonnes of shrimps were conveyed to foreign countries in the past ten months (April 2022-January 2023) of the current financial year 2022-2023, according to the statistics released by the Department of Fisheries.
Myanmar’s seaborne trade saw shrimp exports of 12,268.366 tonnes worth US$43.257 million while 991.963 tonnes of shrimp worth $4.398 million were sent to the neighbouring countries via land borders, totalling 13,260.329 tonnes valued at $47.655 million
In the corresponding period in FY2021-2022, Myanmar exported 9,091.21 tonnes of shrimp ($42.91 million) by sea and 2,554.975 tonnes ($8.707 million) via land borders, accumulating $51.617 million from 11,646.185 tonnes.
The agriculture sector accounts for 30 per cent of Myanmar’s Gross Domestic Product and the income of 68 per cent of the rural community depends on it, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation. Efforts are being undertaken to improve packaging efficiency for fish, shrimp and fishery products.— TWA/EM
