Nearly 1,500 natural disasters strike nationwide in eight months

The Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, has reported nearly 1,500 natural disasters across the country over the past eight months.
Between January and August, these natural disasters included over 300 fire outbreaks, more than 70 floods, over 600 storms, and nearly 500 other occurrences such as landslides, lightning and threats from wild elephants. In total, there were almost 1,500 natural disasters, impacting more than 230,000 individuals.
The department’s statistics reveal that storm disasters peak during April and May, with most of them occurring in the Sagaing Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Ayeyawady Region, Shan State, Kayin State, and Mon State. The highest number of flood incidents took place from May to August. — TWA/CT
