Small onions in low demand, widening price gap

There is a low demand for small onions in the domestic market, while medium and large onions are in high demand to be sent to the border this year, causing the large price gap subsequently.
When locally produced onions fetch high prices, price dumping happens when large quantities of Chinese onions enter the domestic market at below costs. Nonetheless, they are mostly utilized in restaurants rather than households due to their flavour.
The onion prices move in the range between K2,200 and K3,900 per viss depending on size, producing areas (Myingyan, Pakokku, Seikphyu) and qualities on 25 November.
The large onion price hit a record high of K5,100 per viss at the end of 2022. Medium-sized onions are mostly consumed in delta regions, while households in the Yangon Region prefer large onions.
