An alarm light system is to be installed on taxi boards to protect the drivers from crime, according to U Lyan Cin Mang, joint secretary of the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC).

The Yangon City Taxi Association(YCTA) is implementing theflashing system on taxi boards as a precautionary measure to protect drivers from robbery and life-threatening incidents.

“It is true that we are working on an alarm system. Some taxis have installed it. Some are in the process of installing it. The aimis to reduce taxi robbery and other dangers to the drivers,” he said.

In case of a danger, the driver can press a button inside the cabin to activate blue and red flashing lights installed on the board to alert nearby taxis for help.

Required approvals for this alarm system have been sought from different levels of organization and those who wish to install it can contact the committee, YRTC said.

“Its a good idea. It can considerably protect taxi drivers from robbery and other dangers. Taxis should have this system,” a taxi driver said.

There are reportedly about 60,000 city taxis operating in Yangon region.
