Bangladesh imports onions from Myanmar, primarily via sea routes

Bangladesh purchased onions grown in Myanmar, and the majority of export is made by sea.
“Especially, Bangladesh directly buys from Myanmar because they have prepared to stock for the Ramadan. The majority of purchases are made by sea,” said an owner of an onion wholesale centre.
In October 2023, the price of onion per viss was around K2,600 in the local market and surged by K500 per viss in three days due to Bangladesh’s demand.
At present, onions are produced abundantly in all areas. Therefore, prices have declined in the local market, according to onion traders.
“It’s true that the onion price has dropped. Right now, the price has declined. But we can’t say exactly how much it decreases for today. We don’t know the price yet for the onions which were transported yesterday. The price has declined for some reasons, including the fact that this is harvest season in all regions and states, so the production has been abundant,” said an official from Ko Hla Myo onion trading centre in Mandalay.
According to the price per viss of onions released by Bayintnaung commodity wholesale centre on 11 March, Seikphyu onions were K2,800, K2,700, K2,600 and K2,200, and Myingyan onions were K2,900, and between K2,700 and K2,200. — Thit Taw/ZS/ED
