Myanmar shipped more than 300 kinds of fishery products worth US$675.958 million to 45 countries as of 15 March in the current financial year 2023-2024, U Nyunt Win, director of the Fisheries Department (Nay Pyi Taw) said.
The figures showed a downtick compared with those of the corresponding period last year. The seaborne exports grew by 35 per cent, in contrast to those of border channels. Exports of 20 fish species, including hilsa, rohu, sea bass, river catfish and barbus, grew this FY.
“The exports of fishery products this FY swelled to $675.958 million as of 15 March this FY. The fishery products are shipped to foreign trade partners through maritime and border trade channels. Shrimp exports significantly rose, and the farmed shrimps from Taninthayi were the most valuable traded products. More than 20 kinds of fish, including hilsa, seabass, rohu, river catfish and barbus, are being exported worldwide,” U Nyunt Win elaborated.
Myanmar’s fishery exports are steadily going to Japan, Middle East countries, European Union member countries, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, and Australia. Myanmar Fisheries Federation and the Fisheries Department are closely working to bolster fishery exports as a public-private partnership.
Myanmar is committed to sustainable fishery exports depending on market conditions and cooperation between exporters and the department concerned to meet the criteria of the importing countries. While exporting seafood to countries like China with tighter inspection, all the stakeholders in the supply chain are making efforts to strictly adhere to the policy in order to meet the market demand and not affect fishery exports. — ASH/EM
