The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) has granted approval for the export of Myanmar’s farm-produced saltwater shrimps, as confirmed by the Fisheries Department.

In 2023, six companies obtained licences for exporting white saltwater shrimps after reaching an agreement with GACC.

During this month, one of these companies has already exported 124 tonnes of shrimps valued at US$372,000 in two separate shipments.

Shrimps are typically frozen within containers for export. Exporters often find themselves compelled to lower prices due to intense competition within China, which accounts for 30 per cent of Myanmar’s marine product market and involves over 60 companies.

Figures from the Ministry of Commerce indicate that marine products generated $675.9 million in revenue during the first 11 months of the 2023-24 financial year. Myanmar exports more than 20 fish varieties, shrimps, and crabs to 45 countries, including China, Japan, Thailand, and European nations.

Regarding land transportation, exports are facilitated through various border gates, including Muse, Myawady, Kawthoung, Sittway, Myeik, and Maungdaw. – TWA/NT
