The areca nut trade in Myanmar’s domestic market is continuous and demand increased in the last month, according to the traders interviewed.
“Demand and supply of areca nut market is good. Demand increased last month. There is continuous trade in the market. It was better in the previous months,” said an areca nut trader.
Growing areca nuts on a small scale on one’s own land brings more income and the buyers usually come to the owners in person, climb up the palm plants, count the nuts and settle the payment.
They are bought in a mix of small, medium and large sizes, and the average buying and selling prices of one areca nut to Mandalay purchasers are 9-10 kyats and 13 kyats respectively.
Areca nuts are an ingredient in making betel quid in Myanmar and there are regular buyers for different types of nuts such as Pyaung Chan, Khwar San, Lone Thay and ripe nuts.
