The use of bicycles has become widespread again in some townships of Rakhine State, resulting in a surprising surge in bicycle sales, with almost no bicycles left in the market.
Most of residents in Taungup and Thandwe townships have turned to bicycles for convenient travel in the current situation, according to residents from Mayin.
“Price goes up. Despite increase in price, we can’t find any as no more goods are imported due to transportation difficulty. Price has become nearly double- K 1 lakh to 2 lakh, K 1.5 lakh to 3 lakh. Even used bicycles are priced at about K150,000,” said a resident.
As a means of transportation, motorcycles were widely used among Taungup residents but they have now to use bicycles again under the current situation.
“Bicycles have been used widespread again in Thandwe. Some shops no longer have bicycles for sale. Some are reselling to each other. Price has gone up compared to previous times,” said a Thandwe resident.
