Measures are underway to expand coffee plantations by an additional 27,900 acres in 2024, as announced by State Administration Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
If the planned increase in coffee plantation acreage is successfully implemented, coffee production is expected to rise over the next five years. This expansion would result in a total of 300,000 acres of coffee plantation, leading to anticipated benefits within the next five to seven years.
Despite having less arable land than Myanmar, Viet Nam currently outpaces Myanmar in coffee production. In light of this, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing encourages those with capital to invest in coffee production.
The Senior General also highlighted that plots of land have been allocated for farming, some of which remain uncultivated. He urged that the government should reclaim such plots of land.
In Myanmar, coffee is cultivated in various regions, including Nawnghkio, Ywangan, and PyinOoLwin, as well as in Chin State and Bago Region. The lower part of Myanmar is also suitable for growing Robusta coffee.
Approximately half of Myanmar’s coffee production is exported to countries such as the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, China, and Chinese Taipei. — TWA/ TMT
