The first day of the Buddhist Lent falls on the full moon day of Waso when the Lord Buddha preached the world-famous Dhammacakka Sutta to His first-ever disciples.
It marks the first sermon of the Lord Buddha more than 2,500 years ago. Hence, Buddhist peoples keep the first sermon Dhammacakka in their souls as it unveiled the confined knowledge of the secular world in disseminating the great Noble truths to the global peoples. Thanks to the Lord Buddha, people from all walks of life had the chance to understand these Noble truths and knew the ways how to take meditation and analyze the nature of their bodies for overcoming the challenges of the secular world.
The Lord Buddha attained the enlightenment to deeply and comprehensively understand the cycle of life and death. The Lord Buddha started His preaching for all deserved persons until His dying days when He turned 80. The Lord Buddha unveiled the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Paths preached to the people for their interests.
The Noble Eightfold Paths define the right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The Lord Buddha preached that following these paths is sure to attain Nirvana.
In Myanmar, the day of Dhammacakka is one of the significant days for the Buddhist people. The full moon day of Waso is significant for the Buddhists on the day of conceiving the embryo of the Lord Buddha, the day of leaving the society for the jungle, the day of preaching the Dhammacakka Sutta, the day of performing the supernatural miracle, the day of admitting the enlightenment of the Buddha, the day of firstly emerging Dhamma, the day of firstly emerging Sangha and the day of firstly calling Ehi Bhikkhu.
Buddhist people need to perform meritorious deeds whereas members of the Sangha need to especially adhere to the codes of conduct during the three-month Buddhist Lent. The laypersons should take Sabbath based on exercising the dos and don’ts every Sabbath day during the period, being dedicated to the enlightenment to be free from the life circle.
Doing meritorious deeds will bring good things to illustrate the society for ensuring peace and prosperity. Forging sympathy, empathy and mercy will shape both religious and secular worlds as part of decorating the souls of the global peoples, especially Myanmar people to be physically and mentally peaceful.
