More than 50,000 acres of summer sesame planted in Pwinbyu Township this year to ensure food security

More than 50,000 acres of summer sesame have been planted this summer to ensure local edible oil security, according to the Pwintbyu Township Department of Agriculture in Magway Region.
In order to ensure local edible oil security and develop the oilseeds sector, local farmers particularly cultivate peanuts, sesame and sunflower in each season by efficiently using the government irrigation, river water pumping system and underground water. It is learned that the field staff of the Township Department of Agriculture are closely monitoring and providing necessary assistance to ensure the proper choice of good varieties and use of inputs.
During this year’s summer cropping season, local farmers have planted 44,131 acres of summer sesame with irrigation facilities, 808 acres with river water pumping system and 6,556 acres with water pumping system and 2,502 acres with underground water, totalling 53,997 acres of summer sesame have been cultivated.—Hlaing Win Lay (Pwintbyu Myay)/GNLM
