The value of Myanmar’s seafood exports as of 26 August in the current financial year 2022-2023 was estimated at over US$260 million since 1 April, the Ministry of Commerce’s data indicated.
The figures showed a small decrease of $1.65 million in nearly six months as Myanmar’s fisheries export bagged $261.733 million in the corresponding period of the 2021-2022 mini-budget period.
Myanmar exports raw aquaculture products from farms and is caught by onshore and offshore fishing businesses to the external markets. Additionally, aquaculture products are also exported after being processed at cold storage facilities. The Department of Fisheries and Myanmar Fisheries Federation are working together for fishery export promotion and local consumption.
Myanmar annually shipped fisheries products to 45 foreign countries. In the livestock sector, only live cattle are exported to neighbouring countries through cross-border trade channels. Myanmar has been importing shrimp larvae from a neighbouring country to execute the commercial shrimp culture. The public-private partnership is, therefore, required to conduct induced breeding of shrimp, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation. – TWA/GNLM
