Myeik-Kyunsu ferry service resumes due to dropped number of COVID-19 cases

The ferry service will run only one route per day. The one route fees will range from K3,000 per person. The express water ferry services between Kyunsu and Myeik have been temporarily suspended starting from 21 July to prevent the spreading of COVID-19 in Kyunsu township, Taninthayi region.

Due to declined number of COVID-19 cases, the ferry service between Myeik and Kyunsu has resumed with a limited number of passengers, it is learnt.
On 3 October, the passenger ferries started operation between Myeik and Kyunsu route. The number of COVID-19 infected cases has been reduced in those townships as well and efforts are being made for residents to travel more easily.
“Our Kyan Daing Aung water ferry started operating on 3 October. Authorities instructed them to run the ferry in line with the COVID-19 health guidelines. Our ferry accommodation capacity is 200 passengers. But the boat will only accept 50 per cent of passengers following the social distancing rules of the Ministry of Health. We don’t accept passengers more than 100 to prevent the ship from being crowded,” said an official from the Kyan Daing Aung water ferry line.

Myeik district is reporting over 1,200 cases of COVID-19 in the last six months of 2021, with the highest spike and death toll since the third wave of the virus. Of the four townships in Myeik district, Myeik registered the highest infected rate with 780 cases, followed by Kyunsu with 170 incidences. — Aye Maung/GNLM
