Over 13,000 tonnes of maize slated to ship to Thailand through Shweme Port

More than 13,000 tonnes of maize per month are planned to be exported to Thailand through Shweme Port, Shwepyitha Township, Yangon, U Kyaw Lwin, manager-in-charge of Shweme terminal, Shwe Me Logistics Services Co Ltd said.
“We will convey 13,400 tonnes of maize to Thailand monthly with five ships of MCL Shipping Line (each container capacity of 2,700 TEU), whereas construction materials and other goods will be brought in,” he added.
Shweme Port was allowed to ship internationally this year beyond domestic deliveries. It was developed in 2012 and operational for domestic shipping in 2015.
“It was earlier designated as a domestic port. This year, the port handled container shipping overseas. Container ships sailing to Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, and India were seen loading and unloading cargo starting this year.
“Container shipping to and fro Yangon-Kawthoung-Ranong will kick off soon”he added.
The Shweme Port is 4.257 acres wide, having a 110-metre-wide pier where ships can dock to load and unload cargo.
There is a 250-metre by 120-metre warehouse in the port complex. The Shweme Port also forwards cargo to Thilawa Port. — ASH/KK
