There is a total of 81,800 acres of cotton in the Sagaing Region, with 60,900 acres of long-staple cotton, 5,800 acres of extra-long-staple cotton and 15,100 acres of Mahlaing cotton varieties.

The Sagaing Region Department of Agriculture reported a long-staple cotton cultivation project on 81,000 acres in Sagaing Region, Dr Tin Mar Mar Oo, assistant director of the department said.
“The crop is a primary resource for industrial raw materials and local clothing industry. It is suitable for the tropical Sagaing Region. It’s a climate-resilient crop as well. Moreover, an intercropping system with green grams and corn can also be used. It can generate more income for growers. The cottonseed nurtured by the department can yield up to over 1,000 visses per acre. This is why it is a lucrative crop for growers,” she elaborated.
The number of cotton acres will increase in the region for pre-monsoon, monsoon and late-monsoon seasons.
