Approximately 1.5 million visitors, including around 60,000 foreign tourists, travelled Shan State from January to December 2023, according to U Htin Aung Naing, Director of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism (Shan State).
“Shan State, especially southern Shan State, is a major tourist destination in Myanmar. Taunggyi, Inlay, Aungban, and Pindaya are the most attractive destinations.
“The second most popular destinations are Tachilek and Kengtung in the east of Shan State,” explained U Htin Aung Naing.
Shan State boasts over 400 hotels, motels, and guesthouses. Currently, 337 of them are fully operational in the regional tourism industry. The southern Shan State consistently attracts foreign tourists throughout the year, prompting initiatives to transform Kalaw into a tourist city. — ASH/ TMT
