Thanks to the lone goal scored by Thet Hein Soe, Myanmar U-22 men’s football team broke the heart of Timor Leste during the Group A match of the SEA Games men’s football event, played in Phnom Penh, Cambodia yesterday.
The Myanmar team has almost all new players, so the SEA Games experience is very young and the playing style is a bit slow.
The Timorese players made good use of Myanmar’s slow action and played with a counter-attack.
The first half ended with a score of 0-0 even though both teams played hard.
The second half saw better play from team Timor with accurate passing and dribbling.
However, in 72 minutes, the Myanmar team had the opportunity to take a corner kick, and Thet Hein Soe touched the ball into the net through Hein Htet Aung’s corner kick.
After breaking the deadlock, the Myanmar players slowed down and played defensively.
Due to the lack of mutual understanding between the Timorese players, they did not score an equalizer till the final whistle and team Myanmar celebrated a 1-0 victory over Timor-Leste in the group match.
Myanmar team captain Zaw Win Thein said at the press conference after the game that they were able to create opportunities in this match, but could not use them as goals. He congratulated all his teammates for winning. He continued that he was able to play according to the coach’s instructions, but there are still mistakes, and will try to prepare for better results in the next matches.
As a second group match, team Myanmar will face Indonesia on 4 May. — KZL
