Sporadic heavy rains with strong winds over many areas of Myanmar due to current depression: Moezala forecasts

Due to the current deepening depression, isolated heavy rains with strong winds are forecast in some regions and states, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (Moezala) announced.

A low pressure area in in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and it is classified to be Yellow Alert as it is not currently heading towards Myanmar.

According to the observations at 15:30 hrs Myanmar Standard Time on 25 May, the deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has moved to the north and centred at about 320 nautical miles northwest of Coco Island, 295 nautical miles northwest of Hainggyikyun, 265 nautical miles west of Thandwe, 215 nautical miles west-southwest of Sittway, 230 nautical miles south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 230 nautical miles south-southeast of Sagar Island and 255 nautical miles south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal, India). Monsoon is strong over the Andaman Sea and southeast Bay of Bengal, while the weather is cloudy over the rest Bay of Bengal, it stated.

Due to the depression, rain or thundershowers will be fairly widespread until 27 May, with regionally heavy showers likely in Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady, Taninthayi regions and Chin, Rakhine, Kayin, Mon states.

As natural weather phenomena such as strong winds, flooding and landslides can be accompanied by heavy rains, people living in the hilly areas are warned to be aware in advance of landslides and those living near riverbanks, creeks and low-lying areas of flooding.
