Myanmar celebrates 99th International Day of Cooperatives in Nay Pyi Taw

The 99th International Day of Cooperatives was celebrated as per the COVID-19 guidelines yesterday morning in Nay Pyi Taw.
The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development U Hla Moe, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Tin Htut Oo and Deputy Minister Dr Aung Gyi, permanent secretaries and officials from the Cooperatives Department. The Patron and Chairman of the Central Cooperative Society Limited, Rectors from Cooperative Universities and officials from the State/Region Cooperative Departments joined the ceremony via videoconferencing.
At the ceremony, Union Minister U Hla Moe said agriculture and livestock cooperatives must strive to create market demands for their products while cooperative associations are working hard in line with the economic objective “to enhance production based on agriculture and livestock through modern techniques and strengthen all-round development in other sectors of the economy”, which has been implemented by the State.
He added the support of cooperative associations in the agriculture sector. A total of 89,633.60 acres of farmland was rehabilitated on time with K26,330.573 million for the upgrading of cooperatives’ farmland. In terms of input supply, 143,685 bags of fertilizer and 565 bags of seeds and 29,512 bags of pesticides which worth K4,708.603 million were provided. A total of 162 Agricultural Support Services Cooperative Societies also provided 114 threshers, 452 tractors and 64 other equipment for agricultural production.
More than 39,000 cooperative societies formed with 4.2 million members and the Union Minister encouraged the members to come up with new ideas and innovations that are in line with modern systems.
U Aung Phyu, Chairman of Central Cooperative Society Limited delivered a speech in commemoration of International Day of Cooperatives and a message from the International Cooperative Federation was read out by Dr Toe Nandar Tin, Member of Central Cooperative Association Limited. – MNA
