Shwebo paddy, rice samples sent to Thai for laboratory testing

The paddy and rice samples were randomly collected from local farmers from seven townships of Shwebo and Kanbalu districts, Sagaing region and were sent to Thailand for laboratory testing, according to Myanmar’s Shwebo Pawsanmhwe Growers and Exporters Association.
“To test the quality of Shwebo paddy and rice, the association randomly collected the paddy and rice from local farmers from seven townships such as Kanbalu township from Kanbalu district and Shwebo, Wetlet, KhinU, YeU, Taze and Dabayin townships from Shwebo district. Then, the samples of paddy and rice have been sent to Bureau Veritas Laboratory in Thailand,” said a member of the association.
The samples are kept at Myanmar’s Shwebo Pawsanmhwe Growers and Exporters Association office. If the laboratory results are obtained, the relevant townships will be informed.
“The association will be set up as a non-profit organization and they will never play a trading role,” he added.
Myanmar’s Shwebo Pawsanmhwe Growers and Exporters Association, with the support of GRET Myanmar together with France, is making efforts for Shwebo Pawsan to get the internationally recognized Geographical Indicating (GI) designation.
Pawsan rice was previously grown in the Ayeyawady delta region. Now, it is cultivated across the country. There are about 1.3 million acres of Pawsan rice crop every year. Pawsan varieties vary in different regions and harvest seasons. — Lu Lay/GNLM
