Mandalay Region targets cultivation of over 88,000 acres of summer paddy

Mandalay Region Agriculture Department has planned cultivation of over 88,000 acres of summer paddy across the region, said U Nanda Htut Tin, a staff officer of the region department.
The summer paddy cultivation acres are projected 88,908 in 21 townships of seven districts, Mandalay Region. This project commenced in January last year. A total of 17,580 acres have been cultivated under summer paddy so far and the remaining 71,328 acres of farmlands are under cultivation.
“Three summer paddy varieties are primarily cultivated, mostly Shwethweyin variety, rice variety with maturity of 90-110 days and the high-yielding variety. The growing season starts in January and ends in April. The short-duration variety for 120 days is commonly cultivated,” he added.
The project will cover 90 acres in Mandalay of Mandalay District, 7,376 acres in Amarapura, 19,737 in Patheingyi, over 9,600 in Madaya of PyinOoLwin District, 6,600 in Singu, 1,367 in Thabeikkyin, 137 in Tagaung, 553 in Kyaukse, 690 in Singaing, 376 in Myittha, 115 in TadaU, 820 in Meiktila, 14 in Mahlaing, over 1,780 in Myingyan, 1,200 in Taungtha, 150 in Natogyi, 990 in Ngazun, 405 in NyaungU, 980 in Kyaukpadaung, 1,400 in Yamethin and 615 in Pyawbwe townships, totaling 88,908 acres.
Approximately 506,889 acres of monsoon paddy have been harvested out of 507,898 projected acres in the region. The summer paddy uses the irrigation system, river water pumping system and underground water tapping.—Min Htet Aung (Mandalay sub-printing house)/GNLM
