Myanmar’s largest lake houses 170+ species of amphibians, reptiles, and fish

The Research and Development Branch of the Fisheries Department states that Indawgyi Lake, the largest lake in Myanmar, is home to over 80 species of amphibians and reptiles and 90 species of fish.
A researcher said, “The lake’s connection to the Ayeyawady River facilitates the migration of fish during the rainy season via Shwetaung Creek, and they lay eggs in the lake before returning to the Ayeyawady River and other creeks when their eggs are hatched.”
The researcher stressed the importance of conserving the spawning areas within the lake to sustain the delicate ecosystem.
The R&D branch is conducting studies throughout the migratory and incubation routes of Myanmar freshwater fish to preserve endangered species.
Indawgyi Lake, the third-largest lake in Southeast Asia is located in Mohnyin Township, Kachin State. At an elevation of 700 feet above sea level, the natural lake spans 14 miles from south to north and extends seven miles in width. The total area is 314.67 square miles. — ASH/NT
