The Forest Department has established 43 protected public mangrove forests, totalling 716,500 acres, to prevent natural disasters and protect marine ecosystems along the coastal regions.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation designate protected public mangroves to preserve biodiversity and tropical forests. The residents can also source forest products for the long-term by protecting these mangroves.
Currently, Myanmar accommodates 1,384 forest reserves and protected forests. They can mitigate climate change and will also help expand the country’s forested areas.
The efforts include adding more plants in the thinning mangroves, and sharing knowledge and know-how in preserving natural forests. The Forest Department also plans to expand conserving shorelines and mangroves. — TWA/NT
