The transport difficulties triggered by the flooding on certain roads reduced the supply of onions and potatoes on 9 October.
A continuous rainfall in Bago Region from 5 to 8 October resulted in flooding and wreaked havoc on transport. The flash flood from torrential rain caused negative impacts on the commodity supply in Yangon’s Bayintnaung wholesale centre, as per the truck’s arrival information.
The transport difficulties triggered by the flooding on certain roads reduced the supply of onions and potatoes on 9 October. The volume of goods inflow dropped by half compared to that of last week. Between 2 and 7 October, 690,000 visses of onions and 336,000 visses of potatoes flowed into the Bayintnaung market.
The opening price of potatoes rose to K23,000 per viss on 9 October from K2,000 on 7 October. Similarly, a decrease in onion supply also drove the prices up, Ko Aung, a trader from Nyaungpinlay market who daily buys onions and potatoes at Bayintnaung market, told the Global New Light of Myanmar.
The onion prices increased to K2,000-3,250 per viss in Yangon’s wholesale market on 9 October. The markets in regions outside Yangon also showed a price rise of around K200 per viss on 9 October.
The potato price was also up by K500 per viss on 7 October compared to that recorded on 2 October.
The chilli pepper and garlic prices remained unchanged. Meanwhile, the wholesale price of sugar dipped to K3,770-3,790 per viss from K3,800-3,820 on 9 October. — TWA/EM
