Dragon fruit cultivated in Kyaukhtu

Dragon fruit plants are thriving in farm.

The local farmers from Kyaukhtu, Magway Region are growing dragon fruit on a trial basis and their cultivation has succeeded.
“The dragon fruit are grown using of teak, concrete and acacia catechu posts. The dragon fruit are cultivated four feet apart and they are growing well using natural fertilizer such as natural compost and cow dung. After cultivating the dragon fruit branches in the sandy soil, the plants are needed to be used pesticides to protect crops from insect,” said a local farmer.
The dragon fruits need to be irrigated to keep the soil moist. There are two types of dragon fruit species—white and red. After one year, the fruits can be started to pick up. The red dragon fruit is used for diabetes and hypertension, according to a health researcher.
The price of dragon fruits moved in the range of K300 and K500 per one depending upon the size.—Sein Kyaw/GNLM
