E-bikes on top of motorcycles banned in 5 townships of Yangon Region

In addition to motorcycling in five townships in Yangon Region, E-bikes were banned in the second week of June, according to the residents of the townships.
As a result of the ban on motorcycling, local motorcyclists who are making a living with a motorcycle are facing challenges, locals say. The ban has been imposed in Thanlyin, Dala, Hlinethaya, Twantay and Kawhmu townships in Yangon Region. Regarding the ban, the Team Leader of the State Administration Council’s Information Team said motorcycles are banned in some areas for security reasons.
First, Thanlyin was closed to motorcyclists with rumours that it will be open at the end of the month, and locals are facing difficulties in commuting in the township as no buses are running in Thanlyin. Residents have been relying on motorcyclists to get to a bus stop to get out of the township and the ban has made it difficult for the residents to move around, said Ko Naing Lin Aung, a resident in Thanlyin.
Since the motorcycling restriction in Thanlyin Township, locals are renting mini Oway which costs K1,000 per person depending on the distance while the fare for a motorcyclist was K300 – K500.
“The restriction has made the livelihood of my family difficult. I could make around K10,000 per day before,” said Ko Hla Tun, a motorcyclist making a living by transporting passengers around Thanlyin. The Ward Administration Office announced that the motorcycling was banned indefinitely on 9 June in Twantay Township, where most commuters have to rely on motorcycles to go around the villages.
