Honour blood donors: A vital contribution to healthcare

Blood, the lifeline of living beings, plays a pivotal role in supporting bodily functions. Recognizing its significance, many individuals engage in charitable acts by willingly donating blood to those in need, extending their lifespans and enhancing their quality of life.
With four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of antigens A and B, along with the Rh factor (+ or –), the diversity of blood types is vast. This includes common types like A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, and AB-, as well as over 600 other known antigens, creating rare blood types. Certain blood types are specific to particular ethnic or racial groups, emphasizing the importance of diverse donors.

Honouring blood donors is not merely a gesture of gratitude but a vital step towards building a healthier and more compassionate society. Through their generosity, these individuals embody the spirit of solidarity and empathy, enriching the lives of those in need and shaping a brighter future for all. As their actions, directly and indirectly, contribute to society, everybody needs to express their gratitude to all blood donors.

In Myanmar, influenced by Buddhist teachings, people donate blood as a virtuous act, not seeking recognition or rewards as well as self-interest. Regardless, their noble deeds deserve acknowledgement and respect. Actually, those blood donors in Myanmar society are satisfied with their prominent act of donating blood with pleasure. Those who have donated blood once are always keen to donate blood once more.
In 2024, the government introduced the “Excellent Performance in Social Field” medals, with ten blood donors receiving first-class honours, one receiving second-class, and five receiving third-class. Additionally, 145 donors who contributed more than ten times and 249 donors who donated between 40 and 95 times were recognized, totalling 394 individuals honoured at a ceremony.
Thanks to these donors, the National Blood Centre distributed 93,385 units of blood to hospitals in 2023, saving countless lives and alleviating the anxieties of those in critical condition. Blood donors and charitable organizations serve as crucial pillars in the development of the healthcare sector, ensuring the availability of essential resources and medical services for patients nationwide.
Honouring blood donors not only acknowledges their selfless contributions but also encourages others to follow suit, thereby fostering a culture of altruism and community support. By recognizing their invaluable role, we reinforce the importance of blood donation and its profound impact on society’s well-being.
