Authorities carry out replacement of old water pipes, installation of water meters

Residents of Lanmadaw Township informed The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM) that the replacement of old water pipes and the installation of water meters in six townships in Yangon have made it easier for users to access piped water.
With the installation of water meters, the cost of water will be based on the amount used. Residents of 11th Street (Middle Block) mentioned that after the new water pipes were replaced in October, obtaining piped water has become more convenient than before.
Ma Aye Myint, a water user residing in an apartment, informed the GNLM that in the 2022-2023 financial year, she paid only K1,800 per month as a water usage fee. However, in the 2023-2024 financial year, she is now required to pay K3,000 per month.
In October, the Department of Water and Sanitation issued notices to the township’s residents to install water meters in the apartment’s water systems. Charging based on the water meter, similar to an electricity meter, is expected to reduce water wastage. — TWA/CT
