Mitigating heat in Mandalay and Bago: Sun protection initiatives launched

According to a member of the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC), proper shade facilities are provided at busy locations like traffic lights and main intersections in Mandalay, aiming to alleviate the public’s discomfort from the heat.

Since 29 April, MCDC has been fitting proper shade measures to provide shade for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Installations have been completed at 10 locations up to now.

Due to the high temperatures in Mandalay, cases of heatstroke are nearly daily, leading to unconsciousness, suffocation, fainting, and even death. Because of the severe heat, the Mandalay Region Public Health Department has issued notices advising the public to take extra precautions.

Similarly, in Bago Region, sun protection structures and water sprinklers have been installed at major road intersections since early April to help mitigate the effects of the heat on the public. – ASH/TKO
