The Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary in Bago Region is crowded with bird watchers and visitors in the 2023 open season.
During the winter, there are about 100 to 150 visitors to the Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary resort while about 300 visitors are on weekends. There were over 600 visitors on New Year’s Day and Independence Day and the site was packed with visitors and bird watchers at dawn and early morning when the birds look for food.
“It is the migration period of wintering birds and also open season. Therefore, the visitors come to the Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary. We arrange boats for the visitors to watch the birds in the lake. We also provide Guides for local/foreign travellers to be able to watch the birds properly. They can pay homage to the pagoda by watching the birds in the lake. We also grow lotus and green plants and we make other arrangements to get a feeling of living in nature rather than in the bungalow. As the visitor arrival was high on the new year and independence days, we expect higher numbers of visitors on Union Day,” said an official of Moeyungyi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Moeyungyi Sanctuary is 25,600 acres wide and was recognized as a Ramsar Site in Myanmar in 2005. East Asia- Australasian Flyway Partnership recognized it as a Flyway Network Site in 2014. It is a wildlife sanctuary to conserve endangered water birds. The visitors can get there after the six-furlong drive from Pyinpongyi village about 69 miles from Yangon-Mandalay Road in Waw Township of Bago Region. The travellers were flocking to the site for its natural beauty and migratory birds in winter. Moreover, it is also packed with visitors and bird watchers in January 2023. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/KTZH
