Green gram is expected to be exported in the second week of February, according to the pulses trade circle.

The second week of February is the season when new green gram from across the nation enters the market and international export contracts can be signed during this period.

“It is a bit early to export now. It is the sales part and it has to be signed on the harvest. It can only be done next month. Green gram is sold under international contracts and so it can be during the second week when many crops are harvested. As it is harvested in various fields, international sales and exports will commence. Then, the market will be stable,” an official from GLC Myanmar Company, which trades green gram, rice and local produce.

At present, demand for green gram and matpe is increasing as new pulses are being harvested in Ayeyarwady and Bago regions.

“Demand for green gram and matpe is rising. Pulses demand is increasing. Despite the policy change, demand is rising. With the production of new green gram, exporters will start working to find them in advance in the next one or two months,” he said.

In 2023, more than 10,000 tonnes of green gram were exported to the European Union countries.
