The semifinals of the SEA Games women’s football tournament continued on 18 May, with the Myanmar team missing out on the final and Thailand and Viet Nam advancing to the final. Myanmar met defending champions Viet Nam in the semifinals yesterday and lost 0 -1.
Team players tried their best to reach the final, which was far away from the Myanmar team many years ago but lost with a single goal.
Therefore, the Myanmar team will have to compete for third place.
The Myanmar team made some changes to the starting line-up with goalkeeper May Zin Nwe, and players Aye Aye Moe, Chit Chit, Khin Than Wai, Phyu Phyu Win, Pont Pont Pyae Maung, Khin Malar Tun, Naw Htet Htet Wai, Khin Mo Mo Tun, July Kyaw and Win Theingi Tun. The defending champions, Viet Nam, were able to put pressure on the Myanmar team from the start with the full support of the home audience.
The Myanmar team played well in defence and tried to score the goal with a counter-attack. The Vietnamese were able to put more pressure, but the Myanmar defence made a few mistakes. From a cross of Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, captain Huynh Nhu got a reverse header that glided the ball into the far corner, out of the keeper’s reach at 28 minute-mark. The Myanmar team tried to get equalizers in the second half but the Vietnamese defender controlled it.
The Myanmar team did not get a chance because the Vietnamese defenders blocked the connection between Myanmar’s main striker Win Theingi Tun and the midfielders. In the other semifinal, Thailand beat the Philippines 3-0 to reach the final. On 21 May, Myanmar will take on the Philippines for the third place while host Viet Nam will play against Thailand for the championship title. — Ko Nyi Lay/GNLM
