The SEA Games women’s football group matches have come out, and the Myanmar team will start playing against the Philippines.
Only eight teams will compete in the SEA Games Women’s Football Tournament.
Indonesia, which was previously in Group A, withdrew, leaving only eight teams.
Team Myanmar is placed in Group A together with defending champion Viet Nam, the Philippines, and Malaysia while host Cambodia is in Group B with ASEAN powerhouse Thailand, Singapore and Laos.
The group matches will be held on 3, 6, and 9 May and the Myanmar team, which is in tough Group A, will have to play the first and second matches against two big teams, and is expected to make more efforts to reach the semi-finals.
Myanmar will face the SEA Games women’s football bronze medalist Philippines on 3 May, current champion Viet Nam on 6 May, and Malaysia on 9 May.
Team Myanmar is likely to struggle as they are in the same group as the SEA Games Women’s football defending champion Viet Nam and the Philippine team, which has improved significantly in just a few years, and won the SEA Games bronze medal in 2022, the ASEAN Women’s Championship and a ticket to the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Myanmar women’s squad had a bad result in the first round of the Paris Olympic qualifiers in April, so they will likely try to get a good result in the SEA Games. — Ko Nyi Lay/KZL
