During the Thingyan festival, the Yangon Zoo will remain open every day, with no closures, as confirmed by the warden of Yangon Zoological Gardens, U Than Myint Tun. Water-play areas will be set up in the zoo for visitors to enjoy during the festivities. The zoo’s operating hours during Thingyan will be from 8 am to 5 pm, and there will be no increase in entrance fees.
U Than Myint Tun stated, “Thingyan festival marks the Myanmar New Year, and to celebrate, we are setting up water-play areas for visitors to enjoy the festival atmosphere in the gardens. Due to the summer holidays, we’re experiencing higher visitor numbers than usual. Normally, we have around 100 visitors per day, but during the holidays, we’re seeing between 3,000 to 5,000 visitors at the gardens”.
The Yangon Zoo, established in 1906, holds the distinction of being the longest-running establishment of its kind in Southeast Asia. It spans 57 acres and is home to approximately 1,400 animals representing 350 species. Additionally, the Elephant Museum has been expanded, alongside the Aquarium, within the Yangon Zoological Gardens.
Entrance fees are set at K2,500 for adult, K1,500 for child, and K7,000 for foreigner adult and K5,000 per foreigner child. Monks and nuns are granted free entry to the Yangon Zoo. — ASH/ TRKM
