Myanmar’s Pegyi, black sesame prices soar on Chinese demand

The demand for Myanmar’s Pegyi (lablab bean) and black sesame from China is high recently and the price is K200,000 per three-basket bag, according to Mandalay bean traders.
In early March, Pegyi fetched K100,000 per three-basket bag and now the price is K200,000 per bag due to the high demand of China in September. Moreover, the price of black sesame was K145,000 per three-basket bag in June and it is now K200,000, said U Soe Win Myint, owner of the Soe Win Myint Wholesale Centre in Mandalay.
“The local consumption of Pegyi is also high and it is produced as a value-added product called Pegyihlaw to export to Singapore. Moreover, the Chinese demand is also high this year and we get high prices. Chinese people use the black sesame in producing medicines and so they offer fair prices,” he added.
