China is the top buyer of Myanmar rice, with around 180,000 tonnes in the past nine months of the current financial year 2023-2024, beginning 1 April, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation.
Myanmar’s rice and broken rice were primarily exported to China with over 170,000 tonnes, followed by Indonesia with 176,000 tonnes and Belgium with 122,000 tonnes.
The volumes of rice exports were registered at over 98,900 tonnes to the Philippines, over 43,600 to the Netherlands, 32,500 to Malaysia, over 26,500 to Poland, over 22,500 to Spain, over 22,400 to Viet Nam and over 22,000 to Turkiye.
The federation aims to achieve 2.5 million tonnes of rice export in the current FY, bagging $1 billion.
Myanmar shipped more than 950,000 tonnes of rice and broken rice to foreign trade partners with an estimated value of US462 million in the past nine months.
Myanmar exported 2,261,203 tonnes of rice and broken rice to foreign trade partners in the past 2022-2023 FY (April-March), earning $853.472 million.
Last FY, China was the leading buyer of Myanmar’s rice and broken rice with over 775,000 tonnes, followed by Belgium with 323,000 tonnes, Bangladesh with over 239,000 tonnes and the Philippines with over 202,000 tonnes.
Myanmar has been endeavouring to attain a 10 per cent growth in rice exports. MRF stated that it prioritized premium rice exportation and bolstered export volume to increase foreign income.
