Beef price has risen as a result of increasing transportation cost and live cattle price plus being close to Thingyan, according to meat market.
“Beef price has increased. Retail price is now K16000-K17000 a viss, up from K15000. But these can’t be said real prices. We can’t help raising the price in retail market, that’s why we have sold it at K17000. When we buy from wholesalers, fat and tendon are contained, so we have to remove them because buyers don’t want to give good price. I think the price won’t get higher anymore and will fall back,” said Ma Hlaing who runs a beef shop.
Beef retail price per viss was K15000 in February and it is priced between K17000 and K18000 in March in Yangon Region.
“It is expected that the price will fall, because it is uneconomical for buyers. It is resulted from increase in transportation cost and live cattle price. Price is likely to decline back because buyers may feel reluctant to buy later,” said an official from a beef wholesale in Yangon.
Pork which is one of the most consumed meats in Myanmar is now K16000 a viss, up from K15000 in retail market. Beef price has been high this month but it is expected to return to normal price later because of buyers’ sentiment.
