UNESCO conducts field visit to MraukU for World Heritage listing

A pilot study was conducted by an Italian water expert Professor Massimo Sarti and party who arrived in MraukU on 8 February to inscribe MraukU, Rakhine State on the World Heritage List.
Chairperson of MraukU Ancient Heritage Preservation Committee Daw Khin Than, Daw Mya Sabei Nyunt from the Rakhine Community Association, Dr Tin Mar Aung from the Dr Saw Mra Aung Foundation and Director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum U Kyi Khin are also coordinating the field study.
Italian water expert Professor Massimo Sarti conducted the field study at MraukU township waterways – Kyaukrizkay (Creek), Ngwe Taungpauk Creek, Taungphyu Moat, Minthamee Paung Creek, Pann Zaymyaung Creek, Letse Lake and Anuma Lake.
According to the field study, the previous water utilization systems plus water protection systems were satisfactory, officials said.
A proposal for the World Heritage List of MraukU was submitted to UNESCO on 30 December 2021, and UNESCO experts will visit the site in 2023.
MraukU was founded by Rakhine King Min Saw Mon in 1430 AD and ruled for 354 years by successive Rakhine kings.
The UNESCO field study is now underway to preserve its ancient heritage. — Myint Soe (IPRD)/GNLM
