Highway accidents kill 48, injure 276 in Myanmar in 2021H1

In the first six months of 2021, there were a total of 147 reported traffic accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay expressway, leaving 48 people dead and 276 others injured, according to the Nay Pyi Taw Expressway Traffic Police Force.
During the first six months, there were four deaths and 40 injuries in 29 traffic accidents in January, three deaths and 29 injuries in 21 traffic accidents in February, 13 deaths and 51 injuries in 25 traffic accidents in March, 13 deaths and 66 injuries in 21 traffic accidents in April, 12 deaths and 43 injuries in 31 traffic accidents in May and three deaths and 37 injuries in 20 traffic accidents in June.
During the same period of 2020, there were a total of 183 road accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay expressway, killing 35 and injuring 202 others. The number of traffic accidents has declined while the number of traffic-related deaths and injuries has increased in this year compared with the same period that of last year.
The monthly average traffic accident is 24.6 times in the first six months of 2021. The monthly average death is eight, and the monthly average injury is 46.
Human errors such as overspeeding, reckless driving and drowsy driving are mostly blamed for highway accidents in the country. — ZYA/GNLM
