Seintalone mangoes have been cultivated hoping for external markets, said U Than Tun Oo, the head of the Agriculture Department in Kanbalu town.
“We couldn’t sell a lot of fruit in the domestic market. But we can make good trading of Seintalone mango in the Muse market. There is a demand from China. We can make only a few trading of mango in the domestic market like Yangon and Mandalay. We couldn’t rely on the domestic market. So, we are hoping for international markets,” he was quoted as saying.
Last year, we faced some difficulties like unwanted delays to enter mango trucks to China, resulting in poor quality of fruit and low prices.
“The market condition depends on the pandemic. We don’t know exactly what will happen this year as well. China demands mango fruits as yield as we can. But it will take four or five days to reach China because there is a roadblock on the way due to COVID-19,” said a Seintalone mango grower.
“The early mangoes are harvested mostly in Mawlamyine and Taninthayi. The mangoes are early yielding in lower Myanmar because it is close to the equator. Then, Mangoes yield in Yangon and Mandalay. Depending on the distance from the equator, the mangoes are usually yielding in the Kanbalu area from 15 May to 15 June,” U Than Tun Oo clarified. — Lu Lay/GNLM
