The price of old rice has risen by 10 percent in one month, according to the rice market.

“It is true. At present, the price of aged rice is on the rise. As this is the paddy harvest season, the price should be slack. But it rose 10 percent in one month,” said economist Dr. Soe Tun.

Rice wholesalers and retailers say the price is still rising as the stocks of old rice dwindle.

“When we ordered from other towns, we couldn’t get as much as we needed. Aged rice stock is low. The  price of a bag of coarse rice is approaching K 1 lakh,” said a rice broker at the Bayintnaung wholesale centre.

The price per bag of Thukha rice (coarse) has risen from K 72,000 to 75000, and Anyarthar (old) from K 80,000 to 95000 while Ziya rice has gone up to K 85000. These types of coarse rice are the cheapest in the market, rice wholesalers and retailers said.
