The Department of Archaeology and National Museum is digitizing eight museums as the first phase of a project to establish online digital museums, according to Daw Amy Nyan Win, Staff Officer of the department (Nay Pyi Taw).
The effort, initiated in 2023, aims to allow the public to explore digital museums and enhance information sharing for physical visitors.
Staff Officer Daw Amy Nyan Win said: “We have 32 museums under our management. We’re digitizing the museum data into document files to provide visitors with more inclusive access to information. The eight museums to be digitized in the first phase are National Museum (Nay Pyi Taw), National Museum (Yangon), Mandalay Myanansankyaw Golden Palace Museum, Hanthawady Archaeological Museum, Salay (Yokesone) Archaeological Museum, Bagan Archaeological Museum, Sri Ksetra Museum, and Beikthano Archaeological Museum”.
Digital documentation also includes three-dimensional visualization of ancient artefacts, creating an immersive online experience that simulates the feeling of being inside the museum itself. The artefacts with greater historical significance will be prioritized. Online visitors can view the entire museum on the website.
The department will also facilitate offline viewing of the museums’ surrounding areas. The website is scheduled to launch early in March after the final touches are completed. — ASH/NT
